The material determines how the shirt breathes and how long it stays soft.
* 100% Combed & Ring-Spun Cotton: This is the gold standard for daily wear. “Combed” means the short, prickly fibers are removed, leaving only the long, soft strands.

The “Single Stitch” Rule: Look at the sleeve and bottom hems. If there is only one line of stitching, it’s likely pre-1994. Modern shirts (and “repros”) almost always use a double stitch.
* The Tag Tells the Tale: Faded or “paper” tags (like Screen Stars, Giant, or Brockum) are gold mines. If the tag is printed directly on the fabric, it’s usually modern.
* Material Feel: True vintage often uses a 50/50 blend (cotton/polyester). These are thinner, softer, and have a slight “drape” compared to the heavy, boxy 100% cotton shirts of today.
* Natural Wear: Look for “cracking” in the graphic print and a slight “fuzziness” (pilling) on the fabric.
